beginning light project

We have officially started our final project for the first fall semester of BDS. We are eventually going to be making some type of paper light designs. Some what like a lamp but without the juristictions of being so. So far our assignments have been consisting of experimenting with paper warping and its effect on shadows and lighting. We've been experimenting with different types of paper, cuts, folds, processes, reactions, and anything we can think of.
In class we practiced together with different kinds of folds and folding techniques. We learned about different artists who make a living off of the art of paper folding and design. We even watched tutorials in class and followed along to learn about some different folds and they're effect on the paper. Our assignment for next time will be consisting of 25 more design ideas on a different type of paper. Here are some examples:

Photography Essay

Through this reading I learned about the examination of a central division in photography between documents and pictures. The reading takes the reader through the argument between photography abjuring any consideration of art and focus instead on the instrumental forms and mass practices. Photography hasn’t always been viewed as artistically as it can be viewed today. Photography was almost known as lazy and took no artistic interference. But as it came to be that photos made exact replicas of things it was argued that photography could be used to save artists’ effort, labor, and time and freed them to concentrate on a more creative aspect with their work.
This reading really educated me on the history of photography and its many phases through artists and society. I can connect this reading and its importance of equality to this class assignment with its ability to educate the reader on the many aspects of photography and its history. By gaining a full understanding of photography and documents it enables the student to be more aware of the pictures they are taking. If they are aware of the history artists have had with the different stages of photography it will help them gain an overall understanding of photography as art and not as lazy picture taking. This understanding will help with the students over all work in this project given most of the final parts are the use of photos throughout the process.

Parts of a Letter Reflection

There are many parts of a letter that I had no idea even had terms. This reading really opened me up to the science behind typography and the art of letters. Typography itself evolved from our own handy work. We developed over time simple symbols who’s marks clearly separated themselves from all the others. The amount of specific vocabulary for each parts of the letters surprised me. There is a very specific way to identify parts of letters and their visual characteristics. By learning this vocabulary, designers are able to understand, develop and manipulate the visual complexity and harmony of the alphabet. There are a number of aspects of manipulation throughout typography. From the stroke width to apexes and vertexes to crossbars and legs to bowls and counters there are multiple terms to help us describe the letters we use for our language. It is important to know these terms or at least be aware of their existence when discussing typography in the design world.

Group Dynamic Reflection

Over all I feel like we all work pretty well together. We discuss things and don't have a problem voicing our opinions with each other. We're also not afraid to speak of things we don't agree on which makes most of the decision making very effective in the way where mostly every one is pleased, for the most part.

We've gone back and forth on several ideas throughout the process. There have been disagreements and compromises but not really any issues between anyone. Everyone in this group seems to work very professionally together and works really well with discussing their own opinions but staying respectful.

We generate ideas really well within the group. I feel like each of us are always thinking of improvements and problem solving. Together we are constantly coming up with a lot of different ideas and options. Its also never really that difficult for us to come to a decision. I feel like the individuals in this group have the perfect combination of caring about the project but have the ability to go with the flow when decisions need to be made.
