Wolfgang Wiengart
Wolfgang Wiengart was born near the Swiss border of Germany.
He graduated from a two year course in applied art and design at the Merz
Academy in Stuttgart. He discovered the school printing facilities and set
metal type for the first time at age 17. He enrolled as an independent student
to the Bael School of Design in 1963 after being encouraged by his mentor
Karl-August Hanke. He was later invited by Armin Hofmann to teach a typography
class in a graphic-design postgraduate program. While teaching he continued to
produce posters as well as cover designs for Typographische Monatsblatter
magazine where he also served on the editorial board from 1970-1988. His
typographic vision is said to embody similar vitality and richness.
